Year 5 science scheme of work and resources

Explore our Year 5 science scheme of work, designed to help pupils develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts through practical investigations, discussion and evidence-based enquiry. Aligned with the National Curriculum, the scheme supports pupils as they build scientific knowledge, vocabulary and working scientifically skills across Upper KS2.

Part of our comprehensive Scintillating Science scheme, these Year 5 science lessons encourage pupils to investigate, question and explain the world around them using scientific evidence. Current units cover forces and properties and changes of materials, helping pupils develop their understanding of how materials behave and how forces affect movement and objects.

Each Year 5 science unit includes interactive teaching slides, differentiated worksheets, practical investigation opportunities, vocabulary support, knowledge organisers and detailed lesson planning to support progression and confident science teaching throughout Upper KS2.

What’s included in our Year 5 science scheme?

Our Year 5 science scheme of work helps pupils develop scientific knowledge and enquiry skills through engaging, practical lessons linked to the National Curriculum. Pupils investigate forces and properties and changes of materials while developing their ability to plan investigations, interpret evidence and explain scientific ideas using appropriate vocabulary.

These Year 5 science lessons encourage pupils to think critically about scientific concepts and use evidence to support their conclusions. Through practical investigations and discussion, pupils deepen their understanding of how scientists test ideas and evaluate results.

  • Fully planned Year 5 science lesson packs with clear teaching guidance
  • Interactive teaching slides and differentiated science worksheets
  • Practical investigations and enquiry-based science activities
  • Knowledge organisers and vocabulary support for every unit
  • Assessment opportunities to monitor scientific understanding and progression

The scheme is carefully sequenced to support both substantive scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills, helping pupils become increasingly confident in making predictions, controlling variables, recording results and drawing conclusions from evidence.

Through learning about forces and properties and changes of materials, pupils explore gravity, friction, air resistance and water resistance, while investigating the properties of materials and how mixtures can be separated using a range of scientific processes.

Our KS2 science scheme of work supports confident science teaching with clear curriculum progression, practical investigations and engaging resources designed to prepare pupils for more advanced scientific learning in Year 6 and beyond.
