Year 4 science scheme of work and resources

Explore our Year 4 science scheme of work, designed to help pupils deepen their scientific understanding through practical investigations, observation and enquiry. Aligned with the National Curriculum, the scheme supports pupils as they develop scientific knowledge, vocabulary and working scientifically skills across a range of engaging topics.

Part of our comprehensive Scintillating Science scheme, these Year 4 science lessons encourage pupils to think critically, identify patterns and explain scientific ideas using evidence. Current units cover states of matter and sound, helping pupils explore how materials behave and how vibrations create the sounds they hear every day.

Each Year 4 science unit includes interactive teaching slides, differentiated worksheets, practical investigation opportunities, vocabulary support, knowledge organisers and detailed lesson planning to support consistent progression throughout Lower KS2.

What’s included in our Year 4 science scheme?

Our Year 4 science scheme of work helps pupils develop scientific knowledge and enquiry skills through practical, engaging lessons linked to the National Curriculum. Pupils investigate states of matter and sound while developing their ability to observe changes, identify patterns, gather evidence and explain scientific concepts.

These Year 4 science lessons encourage pupils to think more deeply about scientific ideas and begin making connections between observations and explanations. Through discussion, investigation and hands-on learning, pupils develop confidence in using scientific vocabulary and communicating their findings.

  • Fully planned Year 4 science lesson packs with clear teaching guidance
  • Interactive teaching slides and differentiated science worksheets
  • Practical investigations and enquiry-based science activities
  • Knowledge organisers and vocabulary support for every unit
  • Assessment opportunities to monitor scientific understanding and progression

The scheme is carefully sequenced to support both substantive scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills, helping pupils become increasingly confident in planning investigations, making observations and drawing conclusions from evidence.

Through learning about states of matter and sound, pupils explore how materials can change state, investigate the properties of solids, liquids and gases, and develop an understanding of how vibrations travel through different materials to create sound.

Our KS2 science scheme of work supports confident science teaching with clear curriculum progression, practical investigations and engaging resources designed to build scientific understanding throughout Key Stage 2.
