Year 3 science scheme of work and resources

Explore our Year 3 science scheme of work, designed to help pupils make a successful transition into Key Stage 2 science. Through practical investigations, scientific discussion and hands-on learning, pupils develop scientific knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills while building confidence as young scientists.

Part of our comprehensive Scintillating Science scheme, our Year 3 science lessons support pupils as they begin exploring more complex scientific concepts and develop their understanding of working scientifically. Current units cover rocks and soils and forces and magnets, helping pupils investigate the world around them through observation, comparison and practical enquiry.

Each Year 3 science unit includes interactive teaching slides, differentiated worksheets, practical investigation opportunities, vocabulary support, knowledge organisers and detailed lesson planning to support consistent progression throughout Lower KS2.

What’s included in our Year 3 science scheme?

Our Year 3 science scheme of work helps pupils develop scientific knowledge and enquiry skills through engaging, practical lessons aligned with the National Curriculum. Pupils investigate rocks and soils and forces and magnets while developing their ability to observe, compare, predict and explain scientific ideas.

As pupils move into Key Stage 2, they begin to work more independently as scientists. These Year 3 science lessons encourage pupils to ask questions, carry out investigations, gather evidence and communicate their findings using increasingly precise scientific vocabulary.

  • Fully planned Year 3 science lesson packs with clear teaching guidance
  • Interactive teaching slides and differentiated science worksheets
  • Practical investigations and enquiry-based science activities
  • Knowledge organisers and vocabulary support for every unit
  • Assessment opportunities to monitor scientific understanding and progression

The scheme is carefully sequenced to support both substantive scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills, helping pupils build secure foundations for future learning throughout Lower and Upper KS2.

Through investigations linked to rocks, soils, forces and magnets, pupils develop observation, classification and testing skills while learning how scientists use evidence to answer questions about the world around them.

Our KS2 science scheme of work supports confident science teaching through clear progression, practical investigations and consistent lesson structures designed to build scientific understanding over time.
