Mixed Age Geography Scheme of Work

Our mixed age geography scheme of work has been designed specifically for schools teaching combined year groups. Covering Year 1 to Year 6, the scheme provides carefully sequenced two-year rolling programmes that support full National Curriculum coverage without unnecessary repetition.

Unlike single-year geography planning adapted afterwards for mixed-age classes, these schemes have been structured to support progression across each phase. Pupils build knowledge in locational knowledge, map skills, fieldwork, human and physical geography, and geographical enquiry as they move through the school.

The scheme includes dedicated mixed-age geography planning for:

  • Year 1/2 mixed-age geography
  • Year 3/4 mixed-age geography
  • Year 5/6 mixed-age geography

Each mixed-age scheme follows a two-year cycle. In the first year of the cycle, pupils follow the Cycle A geography units. In the second year, pupils follow the Cycle B units. This helps schools avoid repetition while ensuring pupils experience a broad and balanced geography curriculum.

Schools can teach the units flexibly across the academic year. Many schools choose to deliver geography through blocked units across alternate half terms, while others teach shorter weekly geography lessons depending on their curriculum structure.

Part of our Primary Geography Scheme of Work

Our mixed-age geography planning forms part of the wider Primary Geography Scheme of Work, supporting progression from EYFS through to Year 6 with carefully sequenced geography planning, fieldwork and enquiry-based learning.

What’s included in our mixed age geography scheme?

Our mixed age geography scheme of work provides structured, progressive geography lessons for schools teaching combined year groups across Year 1 to Year 6. Fully aligned with the National Curriculum, the scheme supports clear progression in geographical knowledge, enquiry, fieldwork and map skills through carefully planned two-year rolling programmes.

Pupils develop confidence with human and physical geography, locational knowledge, geographical vocabulary and fieldwork through practical, enquiry-led learning designed specifically for mixed-age classes.

Year 1/2 mixed age geography

In Year 1/2, pupils explore local geography, weather and climate, continents and oceans, map skills and contrasting locations while building early geographical understanding.

How to use the Year 1 and 2 mixed-age geography cycle

For schools teaching mixed-age classes, the Year 1 and Year 2 geography units can be organised into a two-year cycle.

In the first year of the cycle, pupils follow the Cycle A geography units. In the second year, pupils follow the Cycle B units. This prevents repetition and ensures that pupils in mixed-age KS1 classes experience a broad and balanced geography curriculum.

Year 3/4 mixed age geography

In Year 3/4, pupils develop geographical enquiry skills through studies of rivers, settlements, climate, Europe, map interpretation and physical geography processes.

How to use the Year 3 and 4 mixed-age geography cycle

For schools teaching mixed-age classes, the Year 3 and Year 4 geography units can be organised into a two-year cycle.

In the first year of the cycle, pupils follow the Cycle A geography units. In the second year, pupils follow the Cycle B units. This prevents repetition and ensures that pupils in mixed-age lower KS2 classes experience a broad and balanced geography curriculum.

Year 5/6 mixed age geography

In Year 5/6, pupils deepen their understanding of sustainability, trade, coasts, population, environmental challenges and advanced fieldwork through increasingly analytical geographical learning.

How to use the Year 5 and 6 mixed-age geography cycle

For schools teaching mixed-age classes, the Year 5 and Year 6 geography units can be organised into a two-year cycle.

In the first year of the cycle, pupils follow the Cycle A geography units. In the second year, pupils follow the Cycle B units. This prevents repetition and ensures that pupils in mixed-age upper KS2 classes experience a broad and balanced geography curriculum.

What’s included?

  • Differentiated geography worksheets and enquiry activities
  • Interactive teaching slides and vocabulary support
  • Knowledge organisers and assessment opportunities
  • Fieldwork activities and map skills progression
  • Structured lesson planning for clear curriculum coverage

Flexible geography planning for mixed-age classes

The scheme is flexible enough to support different curriculum models, including blocked geography teaching across alternate half terms or shorter weekly geography lessons. Many units also include opportunities for practical fieldwork and extended geographical enquiry.

Created by subject specialists and recognised as Highly Commended by the Geographical Association, our Glorious Geography scheme supports progression from EYFS geography through to KS1 geography and KS2 geography.
