This Year 6 shape lesson pack focuses on developing pupils’ understanding of circles, accurate drawing of 2D shapes and exploring nets of 3D shapes. Pupils build on their prior knowledge of shape properties and measurement to apply these skills across a range of geometric contexts.

Across the week, pupils begin by identifying and calculating parts of a circle, including radius, diameter and circumference, and exploring the relationship between these measures. They then move on to drawing 2D shapes accurately using given dimensions and angles, using protractors and rulers to ensure precision. As the week progresses, pupils explore nets of 3D shapes, investigating which nets will form solids such as cubes, cuboids and prisms, and developing their spatial reasoning. Opportunities to compare, describe and construct shapes are built throughout, alongside applying key vocabulary such as vertices, edges and faces. The week also includes assessment and time to revisit key concepts to address misconceptions and strengthen understanding.

Reasoning and problem-solving opportunities are embedded across the lessons, encouraging pupils to explain their thinking, justify their methods and apply geometric knowledge in a range of contexts.
