Year 6 | Position and Direction: Summer Block 2: Week 4 – Lesson Resource Pack
Year 6 position and direction lesson pack | Coordinates, translation and reflection | Summer Block 2 Week 4
This Year 6 position and direction lesson pack develops pupils’ understanding of coordinates across four quadrants before applying these skills to translation and reflection. Pupils build confidence in reading, plotting and interpreting coordinates, then use this knowledge to solve problems and describe movement on the coordinate grid.
Across the week, pupils begin by revisiting coordinates in the first quadrant, focusing on reading and plotting points accurately and identifying the vertices of shapes. They then extend their understanding to all four quadrants, working with positive and negative values and plotting shapes across the full coordinate grid. Midweek, pupils apply their knowledge to solve problems involving missing vertices and coordinate patterns, including working without grid lines and reasoning about horizontal and vertical relationships.
As the week progresses, pupils explore translation, moving points and shapes across the grid and describing these movements clearly using horizontal and vertical shifts. They then move on to reflection, investigating how shapes change when reflected in the x- and y-axes and identifying patterns in how coordinates are affected. Opportunities to explain, justify and compare methods are embedded throughout, alongside addressing common misconceptions such as reversing coordinates or confusing translation with reflection.
Reasoning and problem-solving opportunities are built into every lesson, encouraging pupils to explain their thinking, apply their understanding in unfamiliar contexts and develop accuracy when working with coordinate geometry.
