Year 6 Autumn Week 1 – Place Value to 10 Million

In Week 1 of our Year 6 Autumn place value block, pupils work through the first White Rose small steps: numbers to 1,000,000, numbers to 10,000,000, and flexible partitioning of large numbers. Teaching slides and worked examples guide children to read, write, order and compare numbers, explore powers of 10, and build fluency with place value in 6- and 7-digit numbers.

Lessons focus on using place value charts, part-whole models and counters to support both standard and non-standard partitioning. Pupils develop a secure understanding of number structure and practise explaining the value of digits within large numbers. Includes differentiated worksheets, partner challenges and reasoning tasks to support all levels of confidence in upper Key Stage 2.
