Year 6 area, perimeter and volume assessment | Spring Block 5

This Year 6 area, perimeter and volume assessment helps teachers check pupils’ understanding of key geometry and measurement concepts taught during Spring Block 5. The assessment covers calculating the area of shapes, comparing area and perimeter, and finding the volume of cubes and cuboids.

Questions require pupils to apply their understanding of the area of parallelograms and triangles, recognise when shapes can share the same area but have different perimeters, and calculate the volume of cuboids using multiplication. Pupils also solve reasoning and problem-solving questions involving composite shapes, rectilinear shapes and three-dimensional structures built from cubes.

The assessment includes a mixture of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions so teachers can identify how securely pupils understand the mathematical ideas within the area, perimeter and volume sequence. Tasks require pupils to estimate, calculate and compare measurements using efficient strategies.

What’s included

  • Year 6 area, perimeter and volume assessment questions
  • A mixture of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving tasks
  • Questions covering area of parallelograms, triangles and rectilinear shapes
  • Volume of cubes and cuboids problems using multiplication and cube structures
  • Answer sheet to support quick marking and assessment

Curriculum links

  • Recognise that shapes with the same areas can have different perimeters and vice versa
  • Calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles
  • Calculate, estimate and compare the volume of cubes and cuboids using standard units
  • Solve problems involving area, perimeter and volume

This assessment sits within the Year 6 Spring maths scheme and can be used to check pupils’ understanding after completing the full area, perimeter and volume block.
