Spelling Strand Year 5 – Summer Term – Accompanying Spelling Resources
Year 5 Summer spelling resources – SPaG scheme
Support consistent spelling teaching with our Year 5 summer spelling resources, designed to align with the Spelling Strand Year 5 – Summer Term – overview and rationale and the wider Mrs Mactivity SPaG scheme. These resources follow the Summer term sequence, giving pupils regular opportunities to practise, apply and secure key spelling knowledge.
Each week builds on prior learning, moving from verb prefixes (de-, re-, over-, dis- and mis-) into verb suffixes such as -ate, -ise, -ify and -en. The term then develops into focused coverage of the Year 5 and 6 statutory word list, alongside revisiting commonly confused homophones. This progression supports pupils in understanding how words are constructed as well as how they are applied in context.
This complete set of Year 5 summer spelling resources includes:
- Weekly spelling lists linked directly to Summer term focuses, including statutory word list coverage
- Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check sheets to support recall, accuracy and independent practice
- Spelling handwriting sheets to develop spelling accuracy alongside handwriting fluency. In pre-cursive, cursive and unjoined cursive.
- Spelling activity cards offering varied approaches such as stepped spellings, pyramid spellings, sound button spellings and picture-based tasks
Written by experienced teachers, these resources fit easily into weekly spelling routines and can be used for whole-class teaching, independent practice or targeted support. Activity cards can be revisited across the term to reinforce spelling patterns while keeping practice varied and purposeful.
Use alongside the Year 5 Summer spelling overview and rationale, lesson presentations and dictation tasks to ensure clear progression, regular assessment and consistent spelling coverage across the Summer term.
