Year 5 Spelling Yearly Overview and Rationale

This Year 5 spelling yearly overview and rationale sets out the complete sequence of weekly spelling lists across the academic year, aligned with the National Curriculum and our Spectacular SPaG scheme. Each half term includes five weeks of new spellings followed by a consolidation week for review and assessment.

The lists are tailored for Year 5 pupils and cover complex patterns, suffixes and statutory words from the DfE spelling appendix. Weekly focuses include homophones, -cious and -tious endings, -cial and -tial patterns, -able and -ible words, verb prefixes (de-, re-, dis-, mis-, over-) and suffixes (-ate, -ise, -ify, -en).

The rationale explains how to introduce, practise and assess spellings using ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ activities, dictation tasks, handwriting sheets and weekly tests. It also highlights opportunities for retrieval practice through consolidation weeks and guidance for adapting tests for individual pupils.

Designed to complement the Spectacular SPaG scheme, this overview can also be used independently to deliver a full year of spelling teaching for Year 5.
