Year 5 | Shape: Summer Block 1: Week 3 – Lesson Resource Pack
Year 5 shape lesson pack | Summer Block 1: Week 3
This Year 5 shape lesson pack focuses on developing pupils’ understanding of polygons and 3D shapes, building their confidence in identifying, classifying and reasoning about shape properties. Pupils deepen their knowledge of regular and irregular polygons before moving on to explore 3D shapes and their features.
The week begins with pupils identifying and sorting polygons, distinguishing between regular and irregular shapes based on equal sides and angles. They apply this understanding to calculate perimeters and find missing side lengths in regular polygons. Pupils then move on to identifying 3D shapes from 2D and isometric representations, counting faces, edges and vertices, and exploring compound shapes in greater depth. Midweek consolidation revisits key concepts from across the block, including angle facts, polygon classification and 3D shape properties, before pupils complete an end-of-block assessment to check understanding and address any misconceptions.
Reasoning and problem-solving opportunities are built into each lesson, encouraging pupils to explain their thinking, identify patterns and justify their answers when working with both 2D and 3D shapes.
