Year 5 shape lesson pack | Summer Block 1: Week 1

This Year 5 shape lesson pack focuses on developing pupils’ understanding of angles, including working with degrees, classifying angles and estimating and measuring angles accurately. Pupils build a secure foundation in recognising and describing angles before applying this knowledge in a range of contexts.

The week begins with understanding angles as measures of turn, linking degrees to full, half and quarter turns using real-life contexts such as compass directions and clocks. Pupils then move on to classifying angles, including acute, obtuse, right and reflex angles, before developing their ability to estimate angle sizes using known benchmarks. Later in the week, pupils use protractors to measure angles up to 180° and apply this knowledge to compare and order angles.

Reasoning and problem-solving opportunities are embedded throughout, supporting pupils in explaining their thinking, checking the accuracy of their measurements and applying their understanding of angles with confidence. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
