Year 5 | Position and Direction: Summer Block 2: Week 5 – Lesson Resource Pack
Year 5 position and direction lesson pack | Summer Block 2: Week 5
This Year 5 position and direction lesson pack builds on pupils’ understanding of translation, symmetry and reflection through a sequence of practical and reasoning-based activities. Pupils develop confidence in describing movements on a grid, identifying lines of symmetry and reflecting shapes accurately using horizontal and vertical mirror lines.
The week begins with pupils exploring how coordinates change during translations. Pupils investigate how horizontal movement affects the x-coordinate and vertical movement affects the y-coordinate, using reasoning to calculate new positions after translations. They then apply this understanding to solve problems involving missing coordinates and translated shapes.
Pupils then move on to identifying and drawing lines of symmetry in a range of 2D shapes before exploring reflection in horizontal and vertical mirror lines. They use mirrors, grids and coordinates to reflect shapes accurately, explain how reflections differ from translations and identify common errors when reflecting shapes.
Towards the end of the week, pupils complete a position and direction assessment to revisit key vocabulary and concepts from the unit, including coordinates, translation, reflection and symmetry. A final consolidation session provides opportunities to revisit misconceptions, strengthen understanding and practise key skills from across the block.
