Year 5 | Position and Direction: Summer Block 2: Assessment
Year 5 position and direction assessment
This Year 5 position and direction assessment supports teachers in assessing pupils’ understanding of coordinates, translation, reflection and symmetry. Aligned with White Rose Maths and the Year 5 maths curriculum, the assessment includes a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions linked to position and direction.
Pupils read and plot coordinates in the first quadrant, describe translations and solve problems involving missing coordinates and shape movements. The assessment also explores how coordinates change during translations, helping pupils apply mathematical vocabulary accurately when describing movement across a grid.
Further questions focus on identifying lines of symmetry and reflecting shapes in horizontal and vertical mirror lines. Pupils apply their understanding by drawing reflections, identifying reflected shapes and solving geometry problems linked to rectangles and squares.
Answers and mark schemes are included to support quick and effective assessment. The resource also includes curriculum links for each question, helping teachers identify strengths, gaps in understanding and next steps in learning.
