Year 5 Perimeter Lesson Pack – Spring Block 4 Week 9
Build fluency and reasoning with this Year 5 perimeter lesson pack, aligned with the White Rose Spring Block 4 small steps. Covering rectangles, rectilinear shapes and polygons, the week develops secure understanding of perimeter through carefully sequenced small steps and structured problem solving.
Lessons begin by revisiting the meaning of perimeter as the total distance around a 2D shape. Pupils calculate the perimeter of rectangles using both additive and doubling strategies, compare efficient methods and find missing lengths using inverse operations. They then progress to perimeter of rectilinear shapes, identifying and calculating only the outer edges and working out unknown side lengths before finding the total.
Midweek learning focuses on perimeter of regular and irregular polygons, including using multiplication for regular shapes and finding side lengths when given the total perimeter. The week concludes with structured word problems involving unit conversion between centimetres and metres, and consolidation tasks that address common misconceptions such as confusing area and perimeter.
