Year 5 | Perimeter and Area: Spring Block 4: Week 10 – Lesson Resource Pack
Year 5 perimeter and area lesson pack | Spring Block 4: Week 10
This Year 5 perimeter and area lesson pack helps pupils develop a secure understanding of area and perimeter while applying these skills to compound shapes, irregular shapes and real-life problems. Across the week, pupils learn to calculate the area of rectangles efficiently, explore methods for finding the area of compound shapes and estimate the area of irregular shapes using square grids.
Lessons begin by introducing the concept of area as the amount of surface a shape covers. Pupils calculate the area of rectangles by counting squares and by using multiplication to apply the formula length × width. They then progress to calculating the area of compound shapes by splitting them into rectangles and finding missing lengths when needed. Midweek lessons focus on estimating the area of irregular shapes using square grids before pupils apply their understanding to solve multi-step perimeter and area problems in real-life contexts.
