Year 5 | Perimeter and Area Spring Block 4 Assessment
Year 5 perimeter and area assessment | Spring Block 4
This Year 5 perimeter and area assessment checks pupils’ understanding of key measurement concepts including calculating perimeter, finding the area of rectangles and compound shapes, and estimating the area of irregular shapes. The questions follow the progression of the perimeter and area unit and provide a clear way to assess pupils’ confidence with these skills.
Pupils begin by calculating the perimeter of rectangles and regular polygons before finding the area of squares and rectangles using multiplication. They then estimate the area of irregular shapes using square grids and calculate the area of compound shapes by splitting them into rectangles. The assessment also includes multi-step reasoning problems where pupils apply perimeter and area knowledge to solve real-life scenarios.
This assessment can be used at the end of the unit to check understanding, identify misconceptions and support next steps in teaching.
Assessment covers
- Calculating the perimeter of rectangles and polygons
- Finding the area of squares and rectangles
- Estimating the area of irregular shapes using square grids
- Calculating the area of compound shapes
- Solving multi-step problems involving perimeter and area
This resource sits within the Year 5 Spring maths scheme and supports the perimeter and area block.
