Year 5 negative numbers worksheets and lesson pack

This Year 5 negative numbers worksheets and lesson pack includes teaching slides, differentiated worksheets, reasoning activities and assessment materials covering the White Rose Year 5 negative numbers block. Pupils develop confidence interpreting negative numbers in context, counting through zero, comparing and ordering integers and finding the difference between positive and negative values.

The week begins with understanding negative numbers through practical contexts including temperature, sea level and building floors. Pupils learn to identify positive and negative values, interpret scales and recognise that every positive number has an opposite negative number. Activities encourage children to reason about the meaning of numbers below zero and avoid common misconceptions when comparing values.

Pupils then move on to counting through zero in 1s and counting through zero in multiples. Using horizontal and vertical number lines, they complete sequences, identify missing values and explore patterns that occur when moving between positive and negative numbers. They count through zero in a range of step sizes while developing a secure understanding of how number sequences continue beyond zero.

Later lessons focus on comparing and ordering negative numbers and finding the difference between positive and negative values. Pupils use number lines, thermometers and real-life contexts to compare integers, order numbers and calculate differences efficiently. Reasoning and problem-solving tasks throughout the week encourage pupils to explain their thinking and apply their understanding in increasingly challenging situations.
