Year 5 negative numbers assessment
This Year 5 negative numbers assessment provides an opportunity to evaluate pupils’ understanding of the key concepts taught throughout the White Rose Summer Block 4 unit. The assessment covers interpreting negative numbers in context, counting through zero, comparing and ordering integers, and finding the difference between positive and negative numbers.
Questions have been designed to assess both fluency and reasoning, allowing teachers to identify strengths, address misconceptions and determine whether pupils are ready to move on to subsequent learning. Pupils apply their understanding in a variety of contexts including temperature, sea level, number lines and integer calculations.
The assessment can be used at the end of the block to measure progress, support teacher assessment and highlight areas requiring further consolidation. It provides valuable evidence of pupils’ understanding of negative numbers and their ability to apply mathematical reasoning when working with values above and below zero.
