Year 5 Fractions – Knowledge Organiser
This Year 5 fractions knowledge organiser gives pupils a clear summary of the key fraction skills taught across the Year 5 sequence. It includes visual explanations of equivalent fractions using number lines and bar models, along with worked examples showing how to multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same integer to create equivalent fractions.
The organiser also guides pupils through comparing and ordering fractions by converting to a common denominator. Worked examples show how to select suitable multiples and compare mixed numbers by looking first at the whole number and then the fractional part. Converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions is clearly modelled so pupils understand each step.
Page 2 introduces addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. Pupils can see how to convert denominators when needed, add or subtract numerators once denominators match, and convert improper fractions into mixed numbers. Visual models help pupils understand when to convert, how to simplify, and how to work with whole-number and fractional parts.
This Year 5 fractions knowledge organiser supports pupils throughout the Year 5 Fractions block in our Maths Masters scheme and links directly to the Year 5 Autumn Block 4 Fractions sequence:
