Year 5 decimals sequences and powers of 10 lesson pack

This Year 5 decimals sequences and powers of 10 lesson pack helps pupils strengthen their understanding of decimal place value through exploring decimal sequences and multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000. Throughout the week, pupils investigate patterns, identify rules, apply place value knowledge and use reasoning skills to solve increasingly challenging decimal problems.

Pupils begin by exploring decimal sequences, identifying the difference between consecutive terms and using this information to determine sequence rules. They continue, complete and generate decimal sequences involving tenths, hundredths and thousandths while developing confidence when crossing whole number boundaries.

As the week progresses, pupils focus on multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of ten. Using place value charts, counters and Gattegno charts, they explore how the value of each digit changes when numbers become ten, one hundred or one thousand times larger or smaller. Activities encourage pupils to reason about place value rather than relying on misconceptions such as simply adding zeros.

Later in the week, pupils apply their understanding to solve missing value calculations involving multiplication and division. They use inverse operations, explain their reasoning and justify their answers using place value knowledge. Problem-solving tasks throughout the unit encourage pupils to identify patterns, spot errors and make connections between related calculations.
