Year 5 | Decimals: Summer Block 3: Week 6 – Lesson Resource Pack
Year 5 decimals lesson pack | Summer Block 3: Week 6
This Year 5 decimals lesson pack helps pupils develop confidence when adding and subtracting decimals within 1 and across whole numbers. Through practical representations, reasoning activities and structured fluency tasks, pupils build a secure understanding of decimal place value and related number facts.
The week begins with pupils using known facts to add and subtract decimals within 1, making links between whole-number calculations and decimal calculations involving tenths and hundredths. Pupils then explore complements to 1 using visual models and number bonds before progressing to decimal calculations involving thousandths.
As the week continues, pupils use flexible partitioning and complements to 1 to add decimals across whole numbers. They investigate efficient methods for bridging 1 and apply their understanding through reasoning and problem-solving activities. Pupils then move on to subtracting decimals across 1, using number lines, part-whole models and partitioning strategies to solve increasingly complex calculations.
Throughout the week, pupils explain their reasoning, identify misconceptions and solve decimal word problems involving tenths, hundredths and thousandths. A final consolidation session provides opportunities to revisit key concepts and strengthen fluency with decimal calculations.
