Year 5 Calculating with Fractions Assessment
This Year 5 calculating with fractions assessment is designed to check pupils’ understanding of key fraction objectives taught during the Spring term. The questions focus on multiplying fractions by whole numbers, finding fractions of amounts, working with mixed numbers and solving increasingly complex fraction problems.
The assessment includes fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions. Pupils calculate products such as unit and non-unit fractions multiplied by integers, find fractions of quantities in context, and solve problems involving mixed numbers. Several questions require pupils to explain their thinking or justify whether a statement about fractions is correct, supporting assessment of reasoning as well as accuracy.
Multi-step problems are included to assess deeper understanding, such as finding the original whole when a fraction is given, solving word problems involving money and measures, and combining fraction calculations with division. Comparison questions check pupils’ ability to calculate and compare fractions of different amounts accurately.
This assessment is aligned with the Year 5 National Curriculum and the White Rose Maths progression for fractions. It can be used as an end-of-block assessment to gather evidence of pupils’ understanding, identify gaps and inform next steps in teaching.
