Geography Scheme | Year 5/6 | Cycle B | Block 1: Do People Live in the Amazon Rainforest? | Lesson 6: Why Should we Protect the Rainforest?
Year 5/6 mixed-age geography lesson pack – Why should we protect the rainforest?
This Year 5/6 mixed-age geography lesson pack is part of our Glorious Geography scheme, designed for mixed-age Upper KS2 classes following a two-year cycle. It helps pupils build geographical knowledge and understanding across the key stage without repeating the same units.
Across Cycle A and Cycle B, pupils explore global environments and consider how people’s choices affect places around the world. This helps them develop a deeper understanding of sustainability, interdependence and environmental responsibility.
Why should we protect the rainforest? is the sixth lesson in Cycle B, Block 1: Do People Live in the Amazon Rainforest? In this lesson, pupils explore the importance of the Amazon rainforest, considering its role in supporting biodiversity, climate regulation and human life. They also begin to understand the impact of deforestation and why protecting rainforest environments matters on both a local and global scale.
This lesson provides a strong end point to the unit, helping pupils bring together their learning about South America, settlement and life in the Amazon region.
Each lesson pack includes:
- An enquiry-led approach that develops geographical understanding
- Detailed lesson plans with vocabulary, misconceptions and assessment opportunities
- Clear teacher guidance and secure subject knowledge
- Editable slides that model the learning
- Differentiated worksheets and activities to support all pupils
