Year 5/6 mixed-age geography lesson pack – Amazon rainforest and South America study

This Year 5/6 mixed-age geography lesson pack introduces pupils to South America through an engaging Amazon rainforest case study. Part of our Glorious Geography scheme, it is designed for mixed-age Upper KS2 classes following a two-year curriculum cycle.

The structure ensures that pupils in Years 5 and 6 build a secure understanding of global regions without repeating units, while developing key geographical skills and knowledge.

How can we travel to the Amazon rainforest? is the first lesson in Cycle B, Block 1: Do People Live in the Amazon Rainforest? Pupils explore the location of South America, consider different methods of travel and begin to understand the challenges of reaching remote environments. This lesson sets the scene for the wider unit, helping pupils place the Amazon within a global context.

It works particularly well as a hook lesson, building curiosity while introducing key map skills and geographical vocabulary linked to continents, countries and physical features.

Each lesson pack includes:

  • An enquiry-led approach that encourages geographical questioning
  • Detailed lesson plans with vocabulary, misconceptions and assessment opportunities
  • Strong subject knowledge and clear teaching guidance
  • Editable slides to model and support learning
  • Differentiated worksheets and activities for mixed-age classes
