Year 4 | Shape Knowledge Organiser
This Year 4 shape knowledge organiser supports pupils in securing key geometry vocabulary, facts and visual representations from Summer Block 4: Geometry – Shape. It brings together clear examples of angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons and symmetry to support recall and accurate reasoning.
The organiser includes definitions and visual models for turns and angles, including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns, alongside right, acute and obtuse angles. Pupils are supported to recognise and describe angles using consistent language and clear diagrams.
Different types of triangles are shown and labelled, including equilateral, isosceles, scalene and right-angled triangles, with emphasis on side length and angle properties. Quadrilaterals are also clearly set out, including squares, rectangles, rhombuses, parallelograms and trapeziums, helping pupils compare shapes using their defining features.
The organiser also supports understanding of regular and irregular polygons, showing how the number of sides links to polygon names, and reinforces symmetry through worked examples of shapes and patterns reflected across vertical, horizontal and diagonal mirror lines.
What’s included in this knowledge organiser?
- Turns and angles, including right, acute and obtuse angles
- Visual models for whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns
- Types of triangles with clear property definitions
- Quadrilaterals and their key features
- Regular and irregular polygons with side-based naming
- Lines of symmetry and completing symmetrical shapes and patterns
This knowledge organiser supports retrieval, discussion and reinforcement throughout the block, helping pupils use precise geometric vocabulary and recognise properties accurately.
