Year 4 Start of Year Baseline SPaG Assessment

Year 4 SPaG Baseline Assessment

Use this Year 4 baseline assessment at the start of the Autumn term to assess pupils’ grammar, punctuation and spelling knowledge. It draws on the Year 3 objectives from our Spectacular SPaG scheme and is fully aligned with the National Curriculum.

This informal check helps identify which concepts are secure and where revision might be needed before beginning the Year 4 units.

The assessment includes:

  • Homophones and word families
  • Adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions (cause and place)
  • Prefixes and suffixes to create nouns and adjectives
  • Present perfect verbs and standard verb forms
  • Direct speech punctuation using inverted commas
  • Articles (a/an) and commas in lists

Each question is linked to a Year 3 grammar focus and mapped to a National Curriculum objective, giving you clear insight into your pupils’ starting points. Designed to support progression and prepare for success in Year 4.
