Year 4 | Geometry: Summer Block 6: Week 12 – Lesson Resource Pack
This Year 4 position and direction lesson pack covers Week 12 of Summer Block 6 and focuses on translating points and shapes on a grid, and describing translations accurately. Pupils build on their understanding of coordinates by exploring how points and shapes move horizontally and vertically on a grid.
Across the week, pupils begin by translating individual points and recording the new coordinates, noticing how the x and y values change depending on the direction of movement. They then move on to translating shapes by translating each vertex carefully and comparing the coordinates of the original and translated shapes.
Later lessons focus on describing translations using the correct units and direction, including identifying how far and in which direction a point or shape has moved. Reasoning and problem-solving tasks help pupils explain errors and justify translations using accurate mathematical vocabulary.
