Year 3 SPaG Baseline Assessment
Use this Year 3 baseline assessment to check pupils’ understanding of key grammar, punctuation and spelling skills from Year 2. Ideal for the start of the Autumn term, this SPaG check supports early identification of gaps so you can adjust your teaching as needed before starting the Year 3 scheme.
The assessment covers key areas such as:
- Using suffixes to form nouns and adjectives (-ness, -er, -ment, -est)
- Using coordinating conjunctions (and, or, but)
- Expanded noun phrases and adjectives
- Capital letters and punctuation for statements and questions
- Past and present tense forms, including progressive verbs
- Using commas in lists and apostrophes for contractions
Each question is matched to a small step and National Curriculum objective from Year 2, giving you clear insights into what your class already knows and what to revisit. Simple, practical and great for getting started in September.
