Year 3 Spelling Strand Autumn 2 Lesson Presentations (Weeks 7–11)
Introduce each week’s spelling focus with our Year 3 spelling strand Autumn 2 lesson presentations, designed for use alongside the Year 3 Autumn Spelling Overview and Rationale. These PowerPoints support teaching of spelling rules, tricky words and homophones through clear explanations, examples and visual prompts.
Aligned with the National Curriculum and the Mrs Mactivity SPaG scheme, each presentation introduces the weekly spelling rule before practice activities and assessment. Teachers can use them for whole-class teaching or guided spelling sessions to model pronunciation, pattern recognition and application in context.
- Week 7 – The short /oo/ sound spelt ‘ou’ or ‘oul’ (e.g. young, trouble, could)
- Week 8 – Homophones with the /ai/ sound (e.g. grate/great, mail/male, brake/break)
- Week 9 – Homophones with the /ai/ sound continued (e.g. pray/prey, witch/which, sail/sale)
- Week 10 – Common words with tricky spellings (e.g. answer, appear, bicycle, breathe, busy, business, build, address, believe, breath)
- Week 11 – Common words and patterns with /c/ as /s/ or /k/ and the /ur/ sound spelt ‘ear’ (e.g. caught, centre, century, continue, consider, different, disappear, difficult, early, earth)
These Autumn 2 lesson presentations are ideal for introducing new spellings each week. Use alongside Year 3 Autumn Spelling Resources and dictation tasks for complete coverage of the Autumn term spelling strand.
Combine with the full SPaG scheme for structured progression in spelling, punctuation and grammar from Year 1 to Year 6.
