Year 2 Spelling Yearly Overview and Rationale
This Year 2 spelling yearly overview and rationale provides a complete sequence of weekly spelling lists designed to complement our Spectacular SPaG scheme. Each half term contains five weeks of new spellings followed by a consolidation and review week, allowing teachers to assess understanding and revisit key patterns.
The lists are based on the DfE Year 2 spelling appendix and include a balance of phonics-based patterns, suffixes, and common exception words. Weekly focuses cover patterns such as c for s, dge/ge, kn/gn/wr, suffixes -ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -ly, and words ending in le/el/al/il.
The rationale explains how to introduce and revisit spellings through weekly teaching, consolidation and assessment. It outlines the use of ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’ activities, dictation tasks and tracing or handwriting sheets in precursive and cursive fonts, supporting fluency and accuracy.
This overview aligns with the Spectacular SPaG scheme but can also be used as a standalone guide for a complete Year 2 spelling curriculum.
