Year 2 spelling yearly overview and rationale

Looking for a Year 2 spelling scheme or a clear overview of the statutory spelling patterns taught across the year? This Year 2 spelling yearly overview and rationale provides a complete sequence of weekly spelling lists designed to complement our Spectacular SPaG scheme, with five weeks of teaching followed by a consolidation and review week each half term.

Based on the DfE Year 2 spelling appendix, the overview maps out the progression of common exception words and statutory spelling rules, including patterns such as the /ee/ sound spelt ey, the /s/ sound spelt c, dge and ge, kn, gn and wr, suffixes including -ment, -ness, -ful, -less and -ly, apostrophes, homophones and many other statutory spelling objectives taught throughout the year.

The rationale explains how to teach each week’s spellings using our popular spelling rules PowerPoints, Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check activities, dictation tasks, handwriting sheets and weekly spelling tests. It also provides guidance on revisiting spellings through regular practice, consolidation and assessment, helping pupils develop confidence and accuracy over time.

This overview forms part of our complete Year 2 SPaG scheme. Explore the accompanying Year 2 Autumn SPaG page to see how the spelling progression fits alongside the grammar lessons, planning and assessment resources across the year.
