Year 2 SPaG baseline assessment for Autumn term – National Curriculum aligned

Year 2 SPaG Baseline Assessment

This Year 2 baseline assessment helps you identify your pupils’ starting points at the beginning of the Autumn term. It covers key Year 1 grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives from the National Curriculum, giving you a clear picture of which areas to revisit before launching into the Year 2 SPaG scheme.

The assessment includes:

  • Adding suffixes to verbs and nouns (-ed, -s, -es)
  • Using capital letters correctly, including for names and ‘I’
  • Understanding prefixes (e.g. ‘un-‘)
  • Joining sentences with ‘and’
  • Using punctuation correctly (full stops, question marks, exclamation marks)
  • Sequencing sentences and correcting spacing

Each question is mapped to a small step and linked to the Year 1 National Curriculum objectives, helping you check prior learning in a structured and purposeful way. Ideal for use at the start of the year to spot gaps and plan next steps in SPaG teaching. Explore the rest of our year 2 spelling and grammar scheme.
