Year 2 Plants – Plant Growth Lesson 2: How Do Seeds Grow into Plants? Lesson Pack
This Year 2 Plants – Plant Growth lesson pack builds on prior learning by exploring how seeds grow into plants as part of the Plant Growth unit. Pupils learn about the stages of plant growth, from seed to mature plant, and develop their understanding through hands-on planting and observation.
Through practical activities, pupils plant their own runner bean seeds and begin to track changes over time using an observation log. They revisit outdoor observations to identify how plants change and use scientific vocabulary such as germination, seedling and mature plant. This lesson supports pupils in understanding plant life cycles and prepares them for investigating the conditions plants need to grow.
What’s included in this lesson pack?
- Step-by-step lesson plan with clear teaching guidance
- Interactive Year 2 science PowerPoint slides for whole-class teaching
- Bean Growth Observation Log and outdoor observation prompt sheet
- Assessment questions and key vocabulary support
What pupils will learn
- The stages of plant growth from seed to mature plant
- How to plant and care for a seed
- How to observe and record changes over time
- The meaning of key scientific vocabulary such as germination, seedling and root
Working scientifically in KS1
Pupils observe changes over time by revisiting the same outdoor environment and tracking plant growth. They gather and record data using a simple observation log, make predictions about what will happen next, and use evidence to explain their ideas about plant development.
