Year 2 Essential Maths Skills Baseline Assessment and Tracker

Quickly identify gaps in pupils’ key Year 1 maths knowledge at the start of Year 2 with this short, focused baseline assessment and accompanying tracker.

Created in response to a request from a school, the assessment focuses on the essential skills pupils need before moving into the Year 2 curriculum. It provides a quick starting-point check without taking up too much teaching time.

The assessment covers:

• Counting forwards and backwards to and across 100
• Reading and writing numbers to 100
• Counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10
• Finding one more and one less
• Reading and writing numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words
• Number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
• Adding and subtracting one-digit and two-digit numbers within 20

Use the accompanying class tracker to record results, identify individual and whole-class gaps, and plan targeted teaching, practice or intervention.
