Year 1 Capacity and Volume Lesson Pack
Teach measurement confidently with this Year 1 capacity and volume lesson pack. This practical set of lessons helps pupils understand what capacity means (how much a container can hold) and what volume means (how much liquid is inside). It includes hands-on activities, reasoning tasks and differentiated worksheets to support children as they compare and measure capacity using everyday containers.
Pupils begin by exploring a range of containers and ordering them from smallest to greatest capacity. They then compare volumes in identical containers, using key vocabulary such as full, empty, nearly full and almost empty. Later in the week, pupils learn how to measure capacity using non-standard units such as cups, spoons and jugs (making sure each unit is identical), before comparing containers and writing statements using more than, less than and inequality symbols.
