Year 1 sense of touch lesson pack

This Year 1 sense of touch lesson pack helps pupils explore how the sense of touch can be used to move around and understand the world without relying on sight. Children investigate how their skin helps them feel and navigate their surroundings.

Through practical and investigative activities, pupils experience what it is like to move without using their eyes. They take part in blindfold tasks and explore how touch and other senses can guide movement, developing their understanding of how the body works.

The lesson includes a simple test using a finger maze, where pupils compare how accurately they can move with and without sight. They record results, discuss findings and begin to understand how different senses support movement and safety.

Lesson pack includes:

  • Complete lesson plan with National Curriculum links and assessment opportunities
  • Interactive slides exploring senses and movement
  • Finger maze investigation with recording worksheet
  • Practical activities using blindfolds to explore touch and navigation

This lesson is part of the Year 1 human body and senses unit and supports pupils to understand how different senses work together to help us move safely.
