Year 1 Science Structure of a Tree Lesson Pack
This Year 1 Structure of a Tree lesson teaches children to identify and label the parts of a common tree. Pupils learn key vocabulary (roots, trunk, branch, bark, blossom, sapling), understand that trees are plants that begin as seeds, and practise presenting their knowledge clearly.
Children revisit the oak tree life cycle through a simple drama activity before moving on to close observation and labelling. They complete a differentiated Parts of a Tree worksheet and discuss everyday objects made from wood, linking science to real life.
Lesson pack includes:
- Full lesson plan with NC links and assessment questions
- Interactive slides introducing and revisiting key vocabulary
- Parts of a Tree differentiated worksheet
- Extension ideas including object sorting and outdoor observation
By the end of the lesson, pupils can label the main parts of a tree and explain that both flowering plants and trees start from seeds.
