Year 1 science herbivores carnivores and omnivores

This Year 1 science herbivores carnivores and omnivores lesson introduces pupils to three common animal diet types using UK wildlife. Children learn to define herbivores, carnivores and omnivores, and sort animals based on the food they eat.

Using engaging photos and hands-on sorting activities, pupils match animals to diets, identify their own food habits, and practise classification skills. A practical plenary game helps embed new vocabulary and concepts.

Lesson pack includes:

  • Year 1 herbivores carnivores and omnivores PowerPoint with definitions and animal photos
  • Full lesson plan with misconceptions, differentiation and assessment questions
  • Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore Worksheet (three levels)
  • Extension writing activity and continuous provision suggestions

This lesson helps children identify and name common animals by diet, compare similarities and differences, and use scientific terms in context. Part of our Year 1 Common Animals science block.
