Year 1 Science Growing Plants in the UK Lesson Pack
This Year 1 Growing Plants in the UK lesson introduces pupils to a variety of wild and garden plants they are likely to see in their environment. Children learn to identify and name familiar plants, understand how they grow in different places, and explore the importance of caring for them responsibly.
Through a guided scavenger activity or plant hunt, pupils practise careful observation and recording skills, while learning that some plants may be harmful to touch. The lesson develops early classification and enquiry skills, helping pupils talk confidently about plants in their environment.
Lesson pack includes:
- Complete lesson plan with NC links and assessment opportunities
- Interactive slides introducing common UK plants
- Scavenger Hunt activity and differentiated recording sheets
- Continuous provision ideas for sketching, class field guides and role play
This lesson lays the foundation for the Year 1 Common Plants unit, encouraging pupils to observe closely, use scientific vocabulary, and connect classroom science to the real world.
