Year 1 Science Gathering and Recording Tree Data Lesson Pack
This Year 1 Gathering and Recording Tree Data lesson introduces pupils to the scientific skill of collecting and presenting data. Children act as scientists by observing local trees, making tallies of different characteristics, and showing results using a 100-square or bar chart.
Pupils first discuss how scientists classify trees, then take part in a hands-on tree survey. Working in pairs or groups, they use tally marks to record features such as blossom or no blossom, before representing their findings visually. The lesson emphasises careful observation, accurate recording, and use of correct vocabulary such as deciduous, evergreen, and data.
Lesson pack includes:
- Full lesson plan with NC links and assessment questions
- Interactive teaching slides with examples and guidance
- Tree Data Gathering and Tree Data Recording Worksheets
- Ideas for continuous provision such as natural object sorting and mini surveys
By the end of the lesson, children will be able to classify trees using observable features, record their results systematically, and present their findings in simple charts.
