Year 1 Deciduous and Evergreen Trees worksheet – leaf matching cards

Year 1 Science Deciduous and Evergreen Trees Lesson Pack

This Year 1 Deciduous and Evergreen Trees lesson helps pupils understand the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees. Children learn that deciduous trees lose their leaves each autumn, while evergreen trees stay green all year. They explore leaf shapes, act out the seasonal life of an oak tree, and take part in a local tree hunt.

Practical activities include a Deciduous Tree Scavenger Hunt, collecting and sorting leaves, and using magnifying glasses to observe features closely. Pupils also create and use Leaf Matching Cards to classify trees based on leaf shape, building vocabulary such as deciduous, evergreen, sapling, and trunk.

Lesson pack includes:

  • Complete lesson plan with clear NC links and assessment opportunities
  • Interactive slides with seasonal images and guided activities
  • Deciduous Tree Scavenger Hunt and Leaf Matching Cards
  • Continuous provision ideas including bark rubbings, collages, and story corners

This lesson builds enquiry skills in observation, classification, and recording, while encouraging children to use scientific vocabulary confidently.
