Year 1 science animals in our local environment

This Year 1 science animals in our local environment lesson introduces children to the idea that many animals live close to where they go to school. Pupils explore their local surroundings using observation skills and magnifying glasses to search for clues about animal life.

Children take part in a local environment hunt using pre-set photos of UK animals and then search for evidence of animal activity outdoors, such as tracks or nests. They return to the classroom to compare two animals using an engaging worksheet and sentence writing extension.

Lesson pack includes:

  • Year 1 animals in our environment PowerPoint with built-in discussion
  • Full lesson plan with differentiation, assessment and misconceptions
  • Animal Comparison Worksheet for recording observations
  • Extension writing activity and continuous provision suggestions

This lesson supports pupils to identify and name common UK animals, describe similarities and differences, and understand how to observe wildlife with care. Part of our Year 1 Common Animals science block.
