Year 1 Position and Direction Worksheets, Lesson Plans and Resources
Teach position and direction confidently with this White Rose-aligned Year 1 geometry unit from Maths Masters. This resource pack supports pupils in learning to describe turns and position, using practical activities, clear vocabulary and real-life contexts. Children explore whole turns, half turns, quarter turns and three-quarter turns, then apply positional language such as left, right, forwards, backwards, above, below, next to and in between.
The lessons are designed to build confident use of directional language through movement, games and pictorial tasks. Pupils also complete a mini-assessment at the end of the block to revisit key learning and check understanding.
Each downloadable pack includes:
- Fully planned lesson guidance with key questions, stem sentences and differentiation
- Interactive teaching slides to model turns, movement and positional language
- Differentiated worksheets to practise describing turns and describing position
- Practical activities and activity cards to support hands-on learning
- End-of-block mini-assessment to support review and retrieval
This unit is ideal for supporting spatial reasoning in Year 1 and for teachers looking for structured position and direction worksheets aligned to the National Curriculum objective: describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns.
