Year 1 observing body parts lesson pack

This Year 1 observing body parts lesson pack supports pupils to observe, draw and describe key parts of the human body. Children look closely at features such as the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and hands, developing careful observation skills and accurate scientific vocabulary.

Through paired work and practical activities, pupils explore how body parts are linked to the senses. They investigate how changing or covering parts of the body affects what we can see, hear, smell and feel, helping them build a clear understanding of how the body works.

The lesson includes a structured sketching activity where pupils observe a partner and draw body parts in detail. This encourages close attention to shape, size and position, while supporting discussion and comparison.

Lesson pack includes:

  • Complete lesson plan with National Curriculum links and assessment opportunities
  • Interactive slides exploring body parts and the five senses
  • Body part sketching worksheet for detailed observation work
  • Practical paired activities to develop observation and scientific thinking

This lesson is part of the Year 1 human body and senses unit and builds pupils’ ability to observe closely and link body parts to their functions.
