Year 1 five senses lesson pack

This Year 1 five senses lesson pack helps pupils explore how their senses work and how they are linked to different parts of the body. Children learn to name each sense and match it to the correct body part, building secure scientific understanding.

Through a carousel of practical activities, pupils investigate sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch in engaging and memorable ways. They explore how senses can sometimes be confused, for example when tasting foods blindfolded or comparing how water feels at different temperatures.

Opportunities for discussion and reflection are built in throughout, allowing pupils to describe new sensory experiences and ask questions about how the body works. The lesson also reinforces that touch is felt across the whole body through the skin, not just the hands.

Lesson pack includes:

  • Complete lesson plan with National Curriculum links and assessment opportunities
  • Interactive slides introducing the five senses and key vocabulary
  • Carousel of differentiated activities exploring each sense
  • Practical investigations including taste, smell, touch and sight tasks

This lesson is part of the Year 1 human body and senses unit and supports pupils to understand how their senses help them to explore the world around them.
