Year 1 science measuring the weather lesson
In this engaging Year 1 science measuring the weather lesson from our Scintillating Science scheme, pupils explore how we can observe and record weather using simple tools. Building on prior learning about weather symbols and seasons, this practical lesson introduces the idea of measuring rainfall using a homemade rain gauge.
Through hands-on investigation, pupils follow clear instructions to make a rain gauge from recycled materials and then begin measuring and recording daily rainfall. The lesson encourages observation over time, laying the groundwork for understanding scientific enquiry and data collection. The included worksheet supports children to reflect on what they’ve found out, helping teachers assess understanding in an age-appropriate way.
Includes:
- Step-by-step slides with teacher prompts
- Detailed planning with curriculum links, key vocabulary and prior knowledge
- Differentiated instruction sheet for building a rain gauge
- Rain gauge scales for easy measuring
- Assessment opportunities built into the plenary
This lesson supports children to begin thinking scientifically and to develop curiosity about the world around them. Aligned with the KS1 science National Curriculum, it covers part of the Seasonal Changes unit, helping pupils to observe and describe weather associated with the seasons.
