Year 1 Science the Seasons – Lesson 3: Changes in the Weather
In this Year 1 science the seasons lesson, pupils continue to explore seasonal weather patterns and how to prepare for different conditions. Part of the Scintillating Science scheme, this lesson supports children to identify typical weather in each season, describe differences between them, and think practically about suitable clothing and equipment.
This engaging session includes:
- Weather forecasting role-play to help younger children prepare for different seasons
- A fun corners game using real-life items to explore when and why we use them
- Weather comparisons using a class weather chart and outdoor observations
- Differentiated worksheets where children draw, label or write about suitable clothing for different seasonal weather
Children act as weather reporters and use simple science vocabulary to give advice and share ideas. Assessment questions encourage deeper thinking, such as describing mixed-weather days and comparing two seasons.
This lesson includes:
- Interactive teaching slides
- Easy-to-follow lesson plan with vocabulary, misconceptions and assessment
- Differentiated activity sheets and weather chart
- Optional continuous provision ideas for EYFS/KS1 classrooms
Aligned with the National Curriculum objectives to observe seasonal changes and describe associated weather, this resource helps build strong science enquiry skills.
