Year 1 Science Describing the Weather Lesson (Seasonal Changes – Lesson 1)
This Year 1 science describing the weather lesson helps children observe, talk about and record different types of weather. It’s the first lesson in our Seasonal Changes unit and supports early science skills through movement, discussion and real-life observation.
Pupils explore key weather types including sun, rain, snow, wind, cloud and storms. They use weather symbols and vocabulary to describe what they see, and begin simple data collection using a class weather chart.
Lesson includes:
- Interactive slides with a weather symbol quiz and built-in teacher guidance
- Full lesson plan with curriculum links, misconceptions and assessment
- A3 class weather chart for tracking daily observations
- Differentiated worksheets using symbols, tracing and sentence stems
This Year 1 science describing the weather lesson is ideal for whole-class teaching, guided groups or continuous provision. It builds observation and recording skills, supports speaking and listening, and encourages scientific thinking from the start.
Curriculum links include observing seasonal changes and describing the weather across the year. Children begin using scientific language and recognising that the weather can change throughout the day.
Includes built-in differentiation and practical suggestions to suit all learners.
