Year 1 Addition and Subtraction Lesson Pack
Teach addition and subtraction within 20 with confidence using this Year 1 addition and subtraction lesson pack, aligned with the White Rose Maths small steps. This week focuses on two key strategies: adding by making ten and subtracting by counting back. It includes detailed planning, teaching slides, differentiated worksheets and practical activities to support fluency, reasoning and secure understanding.
Pupils begin by using ten frames to see how many more are needed to make ten, then apply this strategy to add within 20 using part-whole models and number lines. Later in the week, subtraction is taught through crossing out, ten frames and part-whole models, before moving on to counting back on a number line. Children practise subtraction both without crossing ten and (towards the end of the week) crossing ten, with structured support and clear modelling throughout.
