Year 1 Addition and Subtraction Lesson Pack
Teach confident calculation with this Year 1 addition and subtraction lesson pack, aligned with the White Rose Maths small steps for Addition and Subtraction Within 20. This Week 2 pack includes planning, teaching slides, differentiated worksheets and practical activities to support pupils in adding by counting on, using number lines and number tracks, and using number bonds to solve calculations within 20.
Across the week, pupils begin by learning to count on from a starting number using ten frames, towers of cubes and bead strings. They then move on to adding on a number line, including the idea that it is often easier to put the bigger number first (commutativity). Later lessons focus on using known number bonds within 10 to support addition within 20, and the week ends by making and writing number bonds to 20 using tens frames, number tiles and part-whole models.
